suddenly

I am cold.

There is a big hole in my dress, and I am alone in my clothes.

Sounds of heavy footsteps reverberate outside. I shove the chickens aside, rush out, and spot the predator. He is tall, standing seven feet high. His mouth is bloody, and there are feathers in it. A comb. A beak. Wattle. The monster drops back down to all fours, and a booted man approaches him amiably. ‘Good bear, Jo, nice bear.’

I drop to the ground. The dust, the moss, the lichen, the rocks, the feathers, the droppings, all of it gets in my mouth and the other holes in my face. I stifle a sneeze. I have to watch I don’t suffocate. Am I properly hidden? I have doubts: the bear sniffs and turns his snout to me. I can’t stay here a second longer. I crawl toward the forest, then I command my feet to do their thing and run without getting winded.

I escape before I’m noticed. A strong wind comes up. Luckily I know the Chic-Chocs, the secret passages, the way out. East to west by way of the north. You just have to find the main trail, then another after that. Turn right, left, right, and follow the river from there. Spend days roaming the forest. Don’t be alarmed if you spot deciduous trees: the pines will return. They always return. Bear right, but not too much. Sneak a peek at the Albert Falls, then follow the traces of deer and moose in the vegetation. Howl to the east. Avoid falling into fifty-one traps. Don’t think about tomorrow, because things could get worse.
